A few weeks ago, the winter weather got just a bit too much to handle and cabin fever was setting in strong at the Gill household. I searched for things to do locally that wouldn’t cost a small fortune and that would be easy to do by myself with the kids. Thanks to a suggestion from a follower on Twitter, I decided to visit the Buffalo Botanical Gardens.
Located just a short drive from downtown Buffalo, and about 20 minutes from our house in the Southtowns, the Botanical Gardens was a welcomed escape from the bitter cold. They had their winter orchids on display when we went, and smelling the fresh scent of flowers in the middle of January was a nice way to forget about the fact that it was a balmy 16 degrees out that day!
While the flowers were obviously beautiful, the biggest hit of the visit for the kids was the Wegman’s room! The kids enjoyed the large sandbox filled with toys, grabbed a couple coloring pages to bring home, and wheeled around on the push toys in the open space. Letting them explore and play without being constricted to our house or the need to be bundled up outside was a treat for everyone — and until my youngest started throwing sand, it was even a little bit relaxing watching them play!
Special thanks to my mom, aka “Mimi,” for joining us for the day!
The Botanical Gardens is a great kid-friendly option for anyone looking for indoor fun with kids year-round, but especially in the colder months! The only downfall is that there aren’t quite enough activities to occupy young kids for longer than about an hour, hence the 4.5 star rating. I would, however, love to go to the Gardens during their Wegman’s Family Days on select weekends from 10AM-2PM, where they host family activities fit for ages 5-12 (and open to younger children too, with a little help from mom or dad).
If you’re planning on taking a trip to the Botanical Gardens, be sure to check out their Events page for exhibits and exciting things happening soon. There’s an Easter Egg Hunt that you might want to add to your family calendar this month!
