Maker Moms – Harp & Heart Co.

Buffalo Moms Maker Moms feature

I am so excited to announce the newest feature at Buffalo Moms, “Maker Moms” – a place where we can highlight talented mommas and their handmade businesses!

First up on this new segment is Harp & Heart Co., handmade lip balms made from 100%  natural ingredients and Young Living Essential Oils. I’ve been lathering my lips with the Mango Citrus for a few weeks now, and I can’t get enough!

The Maker Mom behind Harp & Heart took some time to talk about herself, her family (including her beautiful daughter Harper, the inspiration behind her shop name!) and her products. Take a look at how she got started and be sure to make it to the bottom of the post for a special giveaway!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
First off, My name is Shawna. My husband and I are both 28 years old, and our daughter Harper will be turning 4 this July. We all love the water and have a little beach babe on our hands for sure! Sunset Bay and Woodlawn are our favorite spots, but don’t let that fool you – we use a lot of hats and sunscreen and are some pale people. We also love to just be home, outside with a bucket of water and a squirt gun.

I was fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom for the first year of Harper’s life and if money were no object, I would have continued that. But… LIFE! Am I right? so with my #1 priority being home 9-5 everyday with my gal-pal, I little by little started picking up some waitressing shifts over the years to fit my lifestyle and now I manage a local restaurant in Colden.

Why did you decide to start your own handmade business?
Looking back, I think it was – simply put – for me. I was at a place in my life where my world centered around my child who was now 3.5 years old and more independent than ever before and I missed that little baby who clung to me. So I had a bit more time freed up to these idle hands of mine that I wanted to put them to work. I am a simple girl. I do actually find joy in being a waitress and serving others, but sometimes the routine can get you down. Starting the shop was a way to bring myself up, to take my hands off my phone when I was bored and make these adorable little natural and organic chap sticks and do what we all hope, “to feel accomplished.”

Do you sell your products locally as well as online?
I do! I actually have sold more than twice as much in person than I have on Etsy so far. For the most part, I sell directly to people through word of mouth. I plan to sell at a local farmer’s market Saturday mornings in Colden as well.

What are your goals for your shop?
My number one goal is to just keep going. I think as moms when you start something for yourself, you sometimes might not finish it, or put it on the back burner; but I would love to be very successful with this shop.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your motherhood journey thus far?
I think I’ve always been the type of person with “all the feels” but that feature expanded more since becoming a mother. I am more aware and proud of the successes and sacrifices of my friends and family and all the people who surround me from that “mother” aspect. So I guess to label it with one word, it’s appreciation for everything. For all of life’s struggles, mistakes, successes, and joys that ultimately lead you to that child in your arms. Every curve ball was worth it.
